Unopened. Signed by the author on a tipped-in leaf. 134 pages, illustrations, maps, facsimiles, appendix. As Texas settlement advanced in the 1850's, Forts appeared at Phantom Hll, Chadbourne, Tarret, Belknap, Clark and Fort McKavett (the latter which was named after Captain Henry McKavett who was killed at the Battle of Monterey on September 21, 1846. Here was a place to guard against the Comanche who were discouraged attacking since it was located on a high hill. Bound in pictorial cloth, lettering brown, spine lettering white, front endpapers are of a very detailed map. A very nice copy.
