512 pages, 7 unnumbered pages of plates, index, The work of the U.S. Christian Commission depended on the donated services of 4,859 Protestant ministers and laypersons including the famed evangelist D.L. Moody who was among the first to deal with the wounded rebels at the Cumberland Field Hospital in Nashville, both sharing the gospel and attending to nursing duties. He also worked for the Commission at Shiloh, Murpfeesboro, Cleveland, and Chattanooga. The author Reverend Edward Parmalee Smith and his wife Hannah Cleaver Smith became the leaders of the Christian Commission in Nashville. Bound in green pictorial gilt cloth accented in black spine gilt, green floral endpapers, some rubbing to upper joint, corners a bit bent. Internally a clean bright copy.
