Many of the plates show the early 20th century development of Mt Wilson and the process of preparing the lens as well as the structure. After his Professorship of Astrophysics at the University of Chicago, he organized the Yerkes Observatory and beginning in 1904 to 1923 he expanded his effort to the Mount Wilson Observatory. He built the Hale Solar Laboratory (which later went to the Carnegie Institute in Washington, D.C. His work became essential for scientists but also was written with clarity for the intelligent non-specialist. Bound in maroon cloth lettered in gilt, spine lettering gilt, some staining to spine, shelf sticker to spine, smaller shelf sticker to front pastedown. small purple owner's stamp to lower portion of title page. A very good copy.
