Reflections Suggested By the New Theory of Matter; Being the Presidential Address Before the British Association for the Advancement of Science, Cambridge, August 17, 1904

London: Longman, Green and Co, 1904. Octavo. Item #027122

24 pages. Among Balfour's many contributions was his study on science and its effects on the social order. He noted that the authority of science came in the community of scholars though a single individual may have articulated the concept. What he does is combining the epistemological and cosmological aspects of these ideas in this paper. All forms of energy and matter itself were only aspects of the "connected set of monads".... This work was a major contribution to a society that had been transformed by science but should be, he argued, interrelated to understanding the social aspects of that discipline. Bound in stiff gray printed paper wraps backed in black cloth tape, sticker to upper left corner of front panel, deaccessioned label from the Carleton College Library. A very good copy.
