Novel about a French naval officer who has two objectives for his stay in Japan - to get a tattoo and to acquire a temporary Japanese wife which became the basis for Madam Butterfly. A handsome copy bound by Dutton in 3/4 brown morocco over light brown paper covered boards, raised bands, compartments lettered and decorated in gilt, top edge gilt, end papers match binding paper, one signature protruding a bit.
