In 10 volumes with subscriber's list. Volumes 7-10 continued bringing the total of over 8500 pages of text in this large folio edition. The project to print the first six volumes required cooperation with over 40 publishers each taking a part to prepare what became an essential guide for English law. Volume I alone, for instance, deals with the Trial of Archbishop Laud and King Charles I in pages 803-998. Earlier cases deal with the Gunpowder Plot and the trial of Sir Walter Raleigh. Volume II has the trial in 1660 of 100 "conspirators" guilty of regicide all of whom were sentenced to death or life imprisonment. ESTC T108500. Later volumes include the trial of Captain Kidd, William Penn, and John Peter Zenger. The last case was held in New York under the authority of the Crown resulting in the landmark case where defense against "seditious libel" was accepted. There are cases of censorship noted where bookseller, printer and even an illiterate bookbinder were all charged with libel as well as the case of against the East India Company. Included for the first time are many of the Star Chamber proceedings. All title pages printed in red and black, vol. I has a large old clear tape mend to verso of title page, all bound in full calf, early rebacking to style, red and black morocco spine labels gilt, endpapers renewed, previous owner's bookplate within each volume, all volumes show a degree of wear to corners and edges, all page edges red. A handsome set.
