Request dated July 15, 1851 from the Port of Wilmington, Delaware for Jacob Thom a col[ored] seaman to be admitted to the City of Philadelphia Hospital by Abraham Staats Dye to William D. Lewis. People of color had virtually complete freedom in the Pennsylvania-Delaware region. While prejudice was not as pronounced as elsewhere in the North and Deep South, there still was a color barrier that this document indicates.
