Hortus Pastorum Sacrae Doctrinae Floribus Polymitus
Lugduni (Lyon, France): Sumptibus Societatis, 1742. Folio. Item #026024
Final edition. xx, 1026 pp., [viii] index. A rare 18th-century Catholic pastoral guide by Jacques Marchant (1547-1648), the celebrated French theologian often called the French John Bunyan for his gift for allegory. Part of the Counter-Reformation revival of spirituality and missionary work, this work translated as The Garden of Pastors with The Mystic Candlestick offers practical instruction and devotional reflection for pastors, retreat leaders, and missionaries. Assisted by Michael Alix of the Church of St. Audoenus of Charity in the Diocese of Paris, this edition adds a new glossary and index of terms for the Gospels. Only two copies recorded in U.S. libraries (Mount St. Mary’s, MD; St. John’s, MN). An uncommon survival in unrestored original vellum, clean and well-preserved, making it a fine acquisition for collectors of Reformation and Counter-Reformation works, rare Catholic theology, or allegorical religious literature. Laid in is research notes by Rev. William O. Harris, Librarian for archives and special collections, Princeton Theological Seminary. Original vellum binding though lacking one clasp.
