xx, 1026 pages, vii, Jacques Marchant (1547-1648) was part of the Catholic revival of spirituality and missionary activity to counteract the Reformation. His special gift was an allegory and he was called the French John Bunyan. The only two recorded copies in U.S. Libraries are at Mount St. Mary's in Maryland and St. John's University in Minnesota. An uncommon item in an original vellum binding. The title translates: The Garden of Pastors with the Flowers of Sacred Doctrine by the Rev. Doctor J. Marchant, Pastor, and Dean of Couvin, professor of Sacred Theology, together with The Mystic Candlestick. Assisted with Michael Alix, at Church of St. Audoenus of Charity in the Diocese of Paris. "A work most useful and necessary for those having the care of souls, for those taking part in retreats and for missionaries. Final edition. A new table of things, words, and meanings for Gospel allusions, never before published, has been added. Laid in is research notes by Rev. William O. Harris, Librarian for Archives and Special Collections, Princeton Theological Seminary. Bound in vellum stamped in blind, paper spine label lettered in brown ink in manuscript, lacks one clasp, some scattered foxing, previous owner's names.
