On the Dimensions of the Rings of Saturn

1855. Quarto. Item #025935

53 pages. English language. DNB notes his major works presented before the Royal Astronomical Society of which he served as President. When he passed away in 1879, they devoted a 13 page obituary listing his major works. This work began in the winter of 1852-53 and continued for the next two years as he made three careful series of measurements on the rings of Saturn with his reading of his exact calculations on December 15, 1855. He compares the measurements made by Otto Struve and points out where they differ as well as the apparent distortion noted by Sir William Heschel which he attributed to optical distortions. He notes the angular values and proves no change whatsoever since the time of Huyghens. A very important scarce work of which OCLC records only one copy at the University of Forschungsbibliotheck Erfurt and Vol. 16 of the Astronomical Society, p. 173ff only comment on his conclusions, nor does it appear in NUC. Bound in heavy brown card stock backed in red cloth, paper label printed in black, a light crease down the center of leaves. A very good copy.
