"The Child's Mind" Offprint, Harper's 1978

New York: Harper's Magazine Press, 1978. Quarto. Item #025523

offprint was given to educators. Copies appear on OCLC only at the University of Michigan. Contains illustrations by Maurice Sendak entitled "It must be", Bruno Bettelheim "Learning to Read" which clearly points out the banality and harm that comes from the Dick and Jane tradition. The copy at the University of Michigan notes: "an illustrated panel across p. 52ff with quotation from Sendak accepting the 1964 Caldecott Metal for his book Where the wild things are (top p. 55) and with "Beethoven Quartet in F op 135--"It must be" (bottom of p. 55/In the Child's mind, a collection of brief essays on the growth of the intellect in the very young. The well-reasoned articles reflect why much of modern educational theory has led to a decline in thought and imagination in the minds of children who receive what is called "education" in the primary curriculum of today. A very nice copy.
