The Knights of Malta or the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (2 Volume set)

London: Longman, Green and Co, 1858. First Edition. Octavo. Item #025436

In two volumes. Volume I (Palestine-Rhodes) 518 pages, photographs, engravings; Volume II, (Malta) 522 pages, (6)pp. publisher's ads and a 16pp. catalog from Bicker's and Son's, index map of Malta (folding). Unlike many of the later edited versions, Major Porter conducted original research and because of his status was given access of unpublished documents in the Record Office. The order was formed in the eleventh century but was expelled from Malta by Bonaparte in 1798. He traces its development from a mere charitable body of religious men to a great military and political organization that transferred its operations from the plains of Palestine to the Mediterranean Sea. The author's military skills reflect much skill in his descriptions of battles and sieges. The two Sieges of Rhodes and the heretic defense of Malta are considered the best accounts of those events. The appendix has included numerous important documents, including a list of the Grand-Masters. A very nice copy bound in a newer 3/4 blue morocco over marbled paper covered boards, raised bands with compartments lettered and decorated in gilt, top edges gilt. A very handsome set with some light flaking of outer page edges not extending to the text. Light stamp from the disbanded Long Island Historical Society. Very nice.
