His exhibits in the United States and Europe showed the technical knowledge but soon it was clear his obsession was with the female nude. Some critics felt his obsession with female frontal nudity had gotten in the way of the classical approach advocated by Kenneth Clark. HIs untimely death in Paris at age 44 shocked the art world.
