3 vol. set. Italian. A defender of the Holy See yet a scholar who tried to reconcile differences not only between the Jesuits and Dominicans but also the troubling Jansenists. Of his many works, this was his major study on the Primitive Christian Costume by which he meant the entire life of early Christians in terms of liturgy, worship, pagan temples, persecution and martyrdom; in short, the entire lifestyle as it existed in the earliest centuries. It became the most influential work in the church on the subject for the next century. Here the scarce Volume III is present. Bound in full vellum, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, all edges marbled, title page in red and black, a few engraved pictorial head pieces and chapter initials, occasional scattered foxing, upper boards of all three volumes bowed as oftentimes seen. A very nice set.
