Edinburgh: Martin McDowall and Company, 1789. First Edition. Item #025093

xiii, [3], 615pp. and 11 large folding maps. There are a few pagination errors as follows: page 67 mis-numbered 97; pages 172-173 repeated; page numbers 175-176 omitted and page 480 mis-numbered 840. William Gordon published important books on accounting and math but this was his most important work. The 11 maps were engraved by John Beugo (1759-1841) who was best known for his portraits of noteworthy English politicians, physicians, artists and Robert Burns; however, he was considered the leading Scottish engraver of the day. His scarce map entitled "North America: from the best authorities " is housed at West Point. The maps are all nice with the exception of the Ireland map which has an old linen tape repair on the verso. Text is very clean. Bound in contemporary ¼ calf over marbled paper covered boards, red morocco spine label gilt. Some chipping to spine ends, joints strengthened. The only complete recorded copy we could locate is at McMaster University (OCLC). -.
