The first blank has a watercolor drawing of a bullfighter engaged in a bull fight signed and inscribed to a close friend by Bullfighter, artist and author Barnaby Conrad. Hemingway was to write an article for Life magazine but became so absorbed in in a brutal season of bullfights, and the deep friendship that developed between him and Antonio Ordonez, the younger of the two rival bullfighters. Antonio was a brilliant matador of which Hemingway ranked among the great bullfighters of all time. His story for Life magazine turned into a book. The book is also an autobiographical treasure that reveals Hemingway in his last years, an old and famous writer who relished his fame but resented the barriers it sometimes places between him and the world he wrote about.
