xiii,567 pp. Portrait frontispiece, alphabetical index. This edition presents many new features. Many poems or parts of poems have been either altered or discarded for a time to appear in a new form in later editions. Each poem had been carefully compared with that appearing in all previous editions, and the changes have been inserted in footnotes. The lines have been numbered. Under the head of "Gathered Leaves" the publisher collected poems as have been dropped, some of which appeared in only one, and others in several editions. The publisher David McKay and Whitman had become close friends over the years until Whitman's death. A beautiful copy bound in dark green cloth lettered and decorated in black and gilt, spine and top edge gilt, previous owner's name on the rear pastedown and a San Francisco bookseller's ticket. Just a touch of rubbing to corners and spine ends. A remarkably nice copy.
