In 4 volumes. Limited to 1000 copies printed on Japanese Vellum paper. The present set is #474. Extra illustrated with etchings in two states with descriptive letterpress tissue guards present. An introduction and life of the author by Adolphe Lalauze. First published in two parts (1605 and 1615) these four volumes offer a new and original translation based on that which must be regarded as the best Spanish text, namely, the last edition of the Royal Spanish Academy,, published in 1819 accompanied by a commentary partly selected from the Spanish editions of Bowle, Pellicer, Clemencin and others. This work is one of the most translated and best-selling books in history, influencing countless authors and artists and becoming a cornerstone of modern literature. A very good set bound in 3/4 red polished calf over marbled paper covered boards, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, double black spine labels gilt, some loss of gilt in spots, top edges gilt, joints had been strengthened.
