The Miracles of Madame Saint Katherine of Fierbois

Chicago: Way and Williams, 1897. Limited Edition. Octavo. Item #024066

Unopened. Limited to 350 copies for America on hand made paper. The present copy is #150. Vignette title page lettered in red and black, the title page, the head, tail pieces, and the initials in this book are the work of Selwyn Image. 152 pp. Translated for the first time from Abbe J.J. Bourasse, Tours, 1858 by Andrew Lang. The original work is Bourassé's edition of the miracles attributed to Saint Katherine of Fierbois, a medieval saint whose cult was linked to the region of Fierbois (France). Lang's English translation here, first published in 1897 (Chicago: Way & Williams) is a quite an early English version of this kind of French devotional/hagiographic material. The work recounts healings, exorcisms, visions and other miracle-stories associated with Saint Katherine and her shrine. A fine bright copy bound in 1/4 white cloth over light green paper covered boards, spine lettering gilt. Very nice.
