First American edition. First printing March. 335 pp. illustrated and with folding map at the rear. This book was originally written in 1919, printed on a newspaper press in Oxford, not for publication but for the author and some of his friends. Many had asked for copies of their own, so the demand gradually grew. The idea of a richly produced edition, with many portrait drawings, is to be published by subscription at a stiff price. Though the price was high and covered the printing, he could not pay the artists adequately. He found another artist to do the job at a minimal cost. The rest is history, and the book has been republished ever since. A very good copy bound in light brown cloth, spine lettering gilt, black and white pictorial endpapers, only a few minor spots of rubbing, in unclipped dust jacket lettered and decorated in red and black, quite worn at corners and edges with large piece torn away from head and foot, jacket rubbed with finger soiling, previous owner's gift inscription dated Jan. 9, '28.
