III and IV; 485-983 pp. Beautifully illustrated with 16 striking full page chromolithographic plates which were omitted in later editions and about 2000 woodcuts. The first two volumes contain the table of contents which begins with an introduction, then the living principle in plants, absorption of nutriment, conduction of food, formation of organic matter from the absorbed inorganic food, metabolism and transport of materials, growth and construction of plants and plant forms as complete structures. The last two volumes consist of The Genesis of Plant Offspring, the History of Species, and Classification of Plants proposed by the editor. A very nice set with extraordinary illustrations, bound in 3/4 green morocco over green cloth, raised bands with compartments lettered and decorated in gilt, top edges gilt, some wear to corners, along with a few spots of staining, edges lightly rubbed.
