Travels in Arabia Deserta

New York: Boni and Liveright, 1923. Octavo. Item #023939

In two volumes. 623 and 690 pp. With a new preface by the author and an introduction by T.E. Lawrence, with all original maps, plans and cuts. One large folding geographical map in rear pocket of volume I. First published in 1888 which consisted only of a few hundred copies. Lawrence tells in his introduction how well known and respected Doughty was to the Arabs. He traveled through their country which Lawrence described as horrible land. Doughty ate like the Arabs though it would be called a starvation diet to an English man, and he lived much like the Arabs while on his travels. Lawrence states there is no other book quite like this one. He says the more you travel there, the greater your respect for the insight, judgment and artistry of the author who paved the way for other authors such as Mr. Wilfred Blunt and Miss Gertrude Bell, and other strong personalities. This was the book everyone wanted. A very good set bound in black cloth, spine gilt but dulled, corners only very slightly bent, in chipped and worn printed dust jackets with toning to spines and edges, some old clear tape mends to underside of jacket, foot of spine on volume II with large piece torn away, with other spots of wear and chipping, volume I has a piece torn away to lower corner of rea flap. From the library of reporter, author and editor Warren Wilmer Brown with his bookplate.
