Munich; (1927): Kurt Wolff. Square Octavo. Item #023618
2nd edition, with 25 full page woodcuts by Frans Masereel, no pagination (2) pp. publisher's advertisements inserted at the end. This is the first graphic novel or wordless book by the Flemish artist Frans Masereel (1889-1972). Later, in 1929, an American artist and author would do his first wordless graphic novel God's Man, a tale of ambition, love, greed and death. Both men used their artistic skills to create wood engravings only to tell a story, no text. Bound in paper covered boards lettered in black, spine lettering black, very short split to head and chip to foot, previous owner's name to bottom of front free endpaper with some whiteout, some finger soiling to covers. A very good copy.
