305 pp. illustrated. Mr. Ashley was an organizer and manager of the first successful fur-gathering enterprise in the central Rocky Mountains in the 1820's. The author traces the life story of General Ashley from its humble beginnings without property or education through his imaginative and diverse enterprises in the mining region of Missouri, through his pre-occupation with land as a surveyor, speculator and promoter, through his innovations in the fur trade, to his contributions and service to his fellow man as a public figure. This biography is the first devoted to his entire life. A near fine copy bound in brown cloth spine lettered in gilt in a very good pictorial dust jacket with a bit of chipping to head and very lightly rubbed edges.
