2nd edition rewritten throughout and enlarged. Frontispiece, 296pp.which includes an appendix, bibliography, and index, illustrated with 11 plates and 22 illustrations in the text. The reason this edition is considered the 2nd edition, rewritten and enlarged is during WWI the government requisitioned all metals (including printing plates), to be melted down. At this point. the book rapidly went out of print. The publisher had decided it still wanted to keep the book on their list of publications and suggested that it should be revised before reprinting it. After 42 years, there were of course new excavations and much newer information to be written. Budge then knew the book had to be rewritten rather than simply reprinted. A very good copy bound in blue cloth, upper board lettered in blind, spine lettering gilt, small nick to lower edge of upper board, corner crease to half-title (binders error) scattered foxing to half-title, title page and dedication page, scattered foxing to fore-edges, only occasional scattered spotting to margins. joints rubbed. No names or bookplates. An essential companion to the original 1884 edition.
