Keramic Art of Japan
Liverpool and London: Liverpool for Sunscibers by the Authors and Henry Sotheran & Co., 1875. First Edition. Folio. Item #023268
Two half titles, two title pages printed in red and black. LXXI, [1]2-61; 51 plates with a page of descriptive text, a 4 page list of marks and monograms, and 4 pages showing examples of the various makers marks. The text and plates were all printed on very heavy paper stock, which in turn would have been too heavy for the pages to open fully while in only one volume. All leaves are on stubs suggesting the book was bound from the original parts. The fine illustrations are in monochrome and chromolithograph. The Japanese were especially known for their fine white Hizen porcelain which was delicately painted with birds and flowers in red, blue and gold, sometimes black and a favorite of the European market. A very nice clean copy without foxing, names or bookplates in 3/4 red morocco over marbled paper covered boards, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, raised bands with compartments lettered and decorated in gilt, binding rubbed, some areas of darkening and wear to binding, corners worn, very small split a to upper joint at foot. A culturally important work. (Book weighs 20 lbs. shipping cost will vary).
