Poems Before Congress

Kibdib: Chapman and Haklk, 1860. First Edition. Octavo. Item #022711

Half-title, 65pp. Of these poems, seven of the eight deal with Italian politics, while the other, A Curse for a Nation, is an antislavery poem that had earlier been published in an abolitionist journal in Boston. The notices in the leading English journals were uniformly unfavorable toward the volume, which they found offensive because of its strident tone and anti-British bias. A fine copy bound by Riviere in full brown morocco, board edges decorated in a gilt vine, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, inner gilt turn-ins, blue coated endpapers, top edge gilt, no names or bookplates. A beautiful copy.
