The Life of Lorenzo de' Medici, Called the Magnificent

London: For A. Strand, T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1797. Quarto. Item #022594

In two volumes, 3rd edition, corrected. Vol. I: Portrait frontispiece, half-title, xxvi[xxvii], 320pp, 136pp. appendix. Vol. II: half-title, 312pp.; Poesie by Lorenzo 111pp. [1] p. description of plates, and 11pp. index. The Posies present at the end of volume two have never been publicly read nor published. They reside in the Laurentian library for which the author had access. He was also supplied two works which gave him further information of the life of Lorenzo. They were written in Latin by Monsignor Fabroni though his writings led to illustrate the political, rather than the literary life of Lorenzo. He also published a work on the life of his grand-father Cosmo, published in one volume. The author also examined the work by Mr. Tenhove whose biography of Lorenzo did not lend much information for his use as his work appeared not to be consistent. Bound in 1/4 black morocco over gray cloth, spine lettering gilt, brown endpapers, previous owner's bookplate. A very clean, wide-margined set with some fading and soiling to cloth and wear to corners.

Price: $225.00
