In two volumes. Volume I: half-title (advertisement on verso), 321 pages; Volume II: half-title (advertisement on verso) 314 pages. subtitle continues: "and a narrative of the Campaign of 1814 by W.D. Moodie, H.P., 21st fusiliers. The arrival of virtually every British soldier describes the incredible beauty of Lisbon from afar but upon going ashore the revolting stench as the streets in virtually every account describe dead dogs, cats, feces, and vermin of every kind. Cooke himself developed a number of illnesses, among the most prominent were typhoid, skin diseases with 5,500 of the force becoming incapacitated in the first few months of their arrival. Cooke also notes the customs of dance, music, and the horrible description of the wounded soldiers on the crude Portuguese conveyances with cries of each rut in the road and the shifting of the wounded against one another. Ex-library set with their red stamp on each title page. A very nice clean bright set bund in a modern full polished calf trimmed double rules in gilt and blind stamped floral roll, raised bands with compartments decoratively stamped in gilt, red and green contrasting labels gilt, endpapers renewed.
