A new edition. Half-title, folding map frontispiece, xi, 614pp, viii, 44pp. catalog along with other maps. As an army officer and military historian, his background began with being posted to the 65th Bengal native infantry in 1842 and in 1847 obtaining a liutenancy in the 33rd Bengal native infantry where in he later served in the Second Anglo-Burmese War. After first writing on the mutiny of the Bengal Army. This massive work was completed and revised before the end of his life and covers every aspect of Indian History in the period 1526 to 1765. Besides the large folding map of Southern India illustrating the Military Operations, 1744 to 1761 facing the title page, there also maps of the operations before Trichinapalli on pages 289 and another on p. 389. He deals with controversial behavior of La Bourdonnais after the capture of Madras (which was challenged after the first edition and successfully defended in this the revised edition). Both battalions saw extensive action during the Napoleonic Wars, and they were brigaded together for a time during the Peninsula Campaign, but heavy losses at Badajoz in 1812.
