Wellesley was the brother of the famous Duke of Wellington, and was the governor-general of India (1797-1805). He rendered British power in India supreme by replacing the Mohammedan dynasty in Mysore with a friend Hindu dynasty, persuading Indian princes to cede territory and contribute to the support of British forces. The war against the Marhatta in December of 1803 further helped to solidify British predominance. Bound in modern 3/4 leather over marbled paper covered boards, flat spine ruled in gilt, morocco spine label gilt, original endpapers retained. a couple of maps with short closed tears, minor off-setting from plates. A clean bright copy handsomely preserved.
