The author's first book. lxx, 621pp., (2)pp. errata. One of the great scientists of the 19th century who had to struggle against the idea that such pursuits should be limited to men. Her advanced book on mechanics was adopted in 1837 by Cambridge as the standard text. She was one of the first women members admitted to the Royal Astronomical Society from which she received a gold metal. The present work was finished after four long years. An important work in which Sir John Herschel considered excellent and recommended it to another publisher. A very nice copy rebound in red cloth, spine lettering gilt, endpapers renewed, occasional spots of foxing.
