First printing. 206pp. Harry Winton (1896-1978) for more than 50 years was the purveyor of some of the most wonderful gems and most fabulous jewelry ever created. Because of his fine work, he traveled the world, and had an adventurous life filled with kings, maharajas, industrialists and more. He began his work at age 15 and over the years he purchased and fashioned some of the finest rough diamonds ever discovered including the Jonker, the Taylor-Burton, the Star of Sierra Leone just to name a few. He is perhaps best known for donating the notorious Hope diamond to the Smithsonian Institution as a gift to the American people. These stories and more reveal some of the ironic twists of fate in the lives of the men and women who pursued these fabulous gems. A near fine copy bound in blue cloth stamped in gilt, spine lettering gilt, previous owner's gift inscription to front pastedown, in clipped dust jacket. A marvelous look at history through Jewelry.
