In two volumes. 529pp. and 472pp.(2)pp. ads. Large folding route map of Emin relief expedition in volume I. Volume II: contains a large folding map of the routes of the Emin Pasha relief expedition from the River Congo to the Victoria Nyanza, a map of Emin Pasha's Province and a profile sketch of Ruwenzori and the Valley of the Semlike. Both volumes illustrated throughout. This is Stanley's account as leader of the controversial Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. The mission was plagued by violence, disease, high casualties and scandals involving Europeans members of the expedition. First large folding map with closed tear near gutter, bound in reddish-brown pictorial gilt cloth lettered and decorated in gilt and black, pictorial spine gilt and black, endpapers are maps, rear board of volume two starting, and with two small stains to rear board very minor wear to corners and spine ends. A very handsome set virtually without foxing, just a bit of faint foxing to margins.
