Ex-library copy with their bookplates and perforated stamp to title page and plates. 316, (1)pp. publisher's ad, with an index, extensive appendix and bibliography. One of the earliest narratives of the fur trade covering experiences on the upper Missouri, in 1809, and an expedition to Santa Fe, in 1821. Written from James' dictation by Nathan Niles, who, resenting local newspaper criticism, destroying nearly all copies. Bound in 1/4 blue cloth over light blue paper covered boards, corners worn through, some rubbing to spine ends, soiling to boards and piece of paper missing near head of upper board. [Howes-J-49].
