London; (1959): J.M. Dent and Sons. First Edition. Quarto. Item #022276
355pp., edited by Patience Empson with an introduction by Thomas Balston. The book is illustrated with hundreds of engravings by wood and copper plates. Also included are a few sculptures Gibbings had done and with a list of art galleries, museums and, libraries with engravings by Gibbings as well as a list of books illustrated by him. Gibbings had illustrated for The Limited Editions Club Darwin's Voyage of H.M.S. and for the Folio Society The Discovery of Tahiti. The present work began while working on another project. He ultimately sketched its layout of the title page and frontispiece, added the dedication and quotation from Vasari and wrote a portion of his recollections of his early years as an artist before continuing his other fulfillment. His commentary was never completed, as other work kept him busy before his death in 1958, prior to the present publication.. (except where a reduction is noted, the reproductions are the size of the original blocks). A very nice copy bound in black cloth centrally stamped in gilt, spine gilt, in original publisher's clear mylar wrapper printed in red.
