Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi

London: Richard Bentley, 1838. First Edition. Octavo. Item #022258

First issue with the last plate without a border, edited by Boz. In two volumes, 288 and 263pp., illustrated by George Cruikshank. Grimaldi, a famous performing clown left his memoir in manuscript to his executer who attempted to have it published. The publisher bought the memoir edited by the executer but it needed too much work to be saleable. Dickens received from his publisher the opportunity to publish this work. Dickens signed an agreement and reworked the memoir adding his own flair. Dickens never had the opportunity to consult the manuscript as the executer sold it. Bound in contemporary 3/4 polished calf over marbled paper covered boards raised bands with compartments decorated in gilt, dark brown and green morocco spine labels gilt, all edge marbled with matching endpapers, occasional spots of foxing to plates, from the library of Charles B. Gilbert. A very good set.

Price: $400.00
