folio sheet (folded), August 16, 1853, 1 page handwritten authenticating he was known by Curtis Gupthill and A.G. Gupthill to confirm he was known in Gouldsboro, Hancock county, Maine under the name of Augustus A. Hoit and a native of Cabot, Vermont and he was known by them for four years and we saw his land warrant that he received for his service aboard the U.S. Savannah in the war with Mexico. The Savannah was the Pacific flagship under Commodore John D. Sloat. He was next commissioned an officer in Company G, Maine 8th Infantry Regiment on September 7, 1861. He was promoted to Full Captain on June 15, 1863. Mustered out on the same day and commissioned an officer in Company A of the U.S. Colored Troops, 34th Infantry Regiment. It was this unit that conducted the raid on the Combahee River at Beaufort, South Carolina. He was promoted to Major on March 1, 1865 and mustered out of the service on February 28, 1866. The document is then authenticated by Asa Edwards, Justice of the Peace. On page 3, the State of Maine, Hancock, SS, Clerk’s Office has Parker W. Perry Of the Supreme Judicial Court confirming the document on August 26, 1853. A fine copy of a document providing previously unknown details of a marine in both the Mexican War and the Civil War. The most detailed record of his comes from the U.S.C.T. (U.S. Colored Troops Military Records). An abbreviated record is found also in the 34th USCT or 2nd South Carolina History, St. Augustine Members.
