Perhaps the highest authority on Anglican church law, still referred to in ecclesiastical proceedings. Begins with general exposition of the state of laws and powers of the Church, but the greatest portion concerns the organization and explication of ecclesial law. Appendix of instrument, ancient and modern. Edmund Gibson, successively Bishop of Lincoln and London, established himself in the controversy whether the lower house of the church could lawfully prorogue itself and call sittings without the archbishop's summons. Then the Chaplain of the archbishop of Canterbury, Gibson fought for episcopal rights against the lower house. Bound in a modern 1/3 brown leather over maroon cloth, slightly raised bands, red and black contrasting spine labels gilt, endpapers re-newed, early owner's names dated 1811 and 1882. a bit of foxing to first and last few leaves but internally clean.
