The most important study of Russian theatre in the early revolutionary years. As Fulop-Mueller notes: The revolutionizing of the theatre soon became one of the most important parts of Soviet propaganda, yet it was this that led to Stanislavsky’s influence on Vakhtangov who transformed a handful of inexperience actors into a corps of brilliant character actors. This led to the establishment of the Habima in Palestine in the decades before the establishing of Israel. They toured Europe, America and Palestine in 1926 and hence this beautiful book has rare photgraphic images of that era, many of which are found nowhere else. They also include those of Leon Bakst, Stravinsky, Larionov, Anna Pavlova, Karsavina and other important actors, artists and players including marionettes. . Covers also little theatre, art theatre and the development of the architectural styles, ballet, opera and various other costumes, art for scenery in black and white and several in rich color. Much of the remarkable developments in American theatre in the post World War II era can be traced to these major influences. A very good copy bound in maroon cloth, spine lettered and decorated in blue and gilt, shelf numbers to rear of title page, dark black coated endpapers to rear some fading to spine and edges.
