London; Nd(ca.1840): Fisher, Son and Co. Octavo. Item #021505
Black and white frontispiece o Goldsmith in volume 1 and 2 other black and white engravings. 416, 416, 424 and 452pp. Volumes 2,3, and 4 contains 40 hand colored plates. Oliver Goldsmith attempted to bring together a history of the earth with a description of its geographical features and many of its species. This work was written for the generalist in mind, in simple English without all the scholarly technical words. He wanted to simply write for those who simply want to know what a certain animal would look like if one came across it while traveling. It was first published in 1774 in eight volumes. Bound in 3/4 calf over black cloth, flat spines ruled in gilt, red morocco spine labels gilt, previous owner's bookplate, some scattered foxing. A very good set.
