Inscribed by the author, Compliments/ David M. Smyth/1904. Laid in a a full page type written letter to Judge W.B. Fellows of Tilton, N.H. from W.E. Chandler, dated Jan. 15, 1913, Washington, D.C. [Chandler was a Senator from N.H. and state house representative 1862-1864 and served as speaker during the last two years; appointed by President Lincoln solicitor and judge advocate general of the Navy Dept. Chandler describes the author to the Judge ... that he was a great inventor and took out many patents of various kinds. That he lived in Northwood, N.H and was a member of the legislature when he (Chandler, A Republican) was defeated in 1901.He goes on to say...." you will remember the latter event for which, among many other things, the Republican party is helplessly suffering temporary annihilation..... But states Smyth was in some respects a wonderful Personage.....An interesting book, The story of the White Mountains written as an entire poem. Bound in green pictorial gilt cloth, lettering gilt, a few tiny spots to upper board. A very nice copy.
