(2)p. manuscript letter measuring approx. 8" x 10 ½", folded, signed and dated January 14, 1867, Coast Survey Office, to Charles Lanman in regards to information pertaining to Prof. A.D. Bache. Mr. Hilgard was born in Germany. He settled with his parents in Illinois. Studied engineering in Philadelphia. He entered the Coast Survey in 1845. He was in charge of the Coast Survey under the Superintendent from 1862 until 1875. Throughout the American Civil War he served the Union Army and Navy by the construction of maps and charts and by surveys as well as by tidal and other information. During the failing health of Professor Bache, Hilgard, who was at that time in charge of the Coast Survey office, was obliged to perform the duties of Superintendent, which he did without extra compensation. He was Commissioner of the Committee of International Standards (seeking uniformity of weights and measures). In 1875, he was elected president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Author of numerous books.
