China (Advertising Promotional Material, Arbuckle Coffe, (ca, 1895)
New York: Arbuckle Bros. 3" X 5" Item #018926
chromolithograph. The card opens "China has made less progress than any nation of the world...a people not given to independent thought." It goes on to note how primitive the Chinese are noting: "one of the peculiarities of this strange race is they are not given to play...their ideas of music, according to our standard, are very crude." Frequently, the cards issued by the Arbuckle Company depicted various races and non-Western countries as primitive. The inherent racism was considered benign since their cards usually viewed non-white cultures as harmless subjects of pity. A fine copy.
