no pagination. [240] pages. While in his day he was known as important books on the English countryside, his contribution to grammar in the early Nineteenth Century is significant. He is closer to the descriptivist approach than the proscriptive approach than his contemporaries. His aim was to reach not the social elite of England, but the everyday person who was literate but unsure of how to write in an organized fashion. In one sense, his work is a major factor in the eras move to understanding linguistics.
