In three volumes, 528,522 and 592pp., each volume has the bookplate of Oskar Teichman, 1880- whose brother Sir Eric Teichman (1884-1944), a British diplomate, who caught two American soldiers with the US Army Air Force poaching on his estate. When he approached them they emptied their M1 carbines killing Teichman instantly. Private Smith [s/n 33288266] was court-martialed, convicted and hung on the gallows at Shepton Mallet on May 8, 1945 (V.E. day). His companion private Wijpacha was not sentence to death, Smith remains are buried in grave 52, row 3 in Oise-aine American Cemetery, Plot E, France. Beautiful set bound in straight grained brown morocco, raised bands, red and green morocco spine labels gilt, other compartments lavishly gilt decorated, marbled edges with matching endpapers. Lower joint of volume one somewhat tender and minor spots of rubbing.
