The Geographical, Natural, and Civil History of Chili

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme, 1809. Octavo. Item #018724

2 vol. set. Vol. I. 321 pages, with folding map. (p. 321, closed tear). Vol. 2. 385p. Molina's work was based on his extensive knowledge of the history of South America; consequently, he drew on the best contemporary sources some of which are now lost. Richard Alsop (1761-1815) translated the volumes in 1808 and the 1809 edition has notes by Robert Southey. These added notes (see viii are distinguished by adding the letters E.E.). This includes material from Falkner's Description of Patagonia, discussions of the languages of the Auracanos, two appendices. Handsomely bound in a recent 1/4 brown morocco over brown paper covered boards, raised bands with lettering gilt, endpapers renewed. Some toning to the text with occasional spots of foxing.
