Songs for a New America
Bloomington, Indiana: Indiana University Press, 1953. First Edition. Octavo. Item #018392
80p. An important contribution by a Mississippi author to serious American poetry. [See Contemporary Authors] Inscribed: "For Dick and Doris Fredericks, after a good week on Star Island--Hoping to see you again. Charles G. Bell, 1957." In addition, the author has corrected two typographical errors in his own hand of the poem "Augustinian Wisdom" on p. 59. Carol Henderson in The Chicago Review gave the work a three page review and noted how rich the poem was in beauty in the midst of the hopelessness of the modern world. Galway Kinnell notes there is good poetry in this book, powerful in thought, direct in feeling and clear in vision. In the Antioch Review Coralie Beyers notes that the poet gives rise a level that is reminiscent of Robert Frost. Bookplate shows Church of Gosport at Star Island. The owner and his wife spent a summer with Bell on Star Island. Previous owner's bookplate. A near fine copy in a very good dust jacket with some small chips at top of front panel.
