Washingon, DC: J.R. Jones, 1897. Octavo. Item #018281

subtitle continues: Mrs. Eli Gage's Experiences of a Year Among the Yukon Mining Camps; Mrs. Schwatka's Recollections of her Husband as the Alaskan Pathfinder; Prosaic Side of Gold Hunting, as seen by Joaquin Miller, the Poet of the Sierras. Embellished with many Engravings Representing Mining and Other Scenes in Alaska. 528p. Original dark yellow cloth, decoratively stamped front cover and spine. A good copy with large color fold-out map in front. Folding map in detail of the Klondike. Edge wear, light soiling but nice tight binding. Many illustrations including : Claim No. 3 on Miller Creek where Joseph Beaudreau took over $100,000 in gold; mining camps with log houses. The chapter on preparation minimizes the extreme cold and shows the cost of mining equipment, a medicine cabinet and heavy clothing. It is likely most people would see it as if under funded a recipe for disaster. This remains one of the most fascinating accounts of life in the Alaska gold fields. The very last chapter: domestic life in the woods has fascinating accounts of the fortunes gained and lost at the gambling table, the heavy use of alcohol, women who were horrified at the uncivilized state of things such as Anna Falconer's account.
