These photographs show the German POW's at Camp Pittsburgh. Once the Allies secured the French harbor Le Havre, they began to create a ring of camps as staging area for new troops. In the meantime, they created "Cigarette Camps" in the interior for German troops. While the camps were named for the various brands (so that the Germans would not know which area were referred to in radio transmissions), the POW camps were named after cities back home. These photographs came from "Camp Pittsburgh." The earliest ones dated are Dec. 1945 and the latest June 21, 1946. There are pictures of the barracks, and include Ping Pong, having a small pet dog, cigarettes (which were scarce in occupied areas), and their general camaraderie. On the back of some photographs there are greetings or comments in German. It is likely these were left in the camp when the POWS were released. (They are part of a larger collection of earlier Third Reich photographs.).
